Writing a romance novel and have questions about the editing process?

In my editing business, I believe in full transparency between myself and the authors I work with. I provide explanations throughout the process and am always available to answer questions. I know how scary it can be to hand your manuscript off to a stranger. As an author, I get what an investment quality editing is. You always want to make sure you’re working with someone you can trust.

Which is why I wanted to go over some of this's editor's frequently asked questions. Even if we don’t end up working together, hopefully these help you find an editor who is more aligned to your needs.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, I do! A non-refundable deposit is required to secure your sport. We will deduct this from your editing service’s total cost. The remaining balance will be due in three separate payments. I’ve made these more flexible if need be; my only two requirements are the deposit to secure your spot and the last payment received before you receive your completed manuscript.

Do you require me to list you as my editor in acknowledgements or copyright page?

You aren’t required to do so by contract, but it would be appreciated. I send out a testimonial form I ask all authors to fill out following the completion of their projects.

Do you offer discounts?

All my rates are well under the recommended rates provided by the EFA. I cut these prices specifically to be more accessible to indie authors, especially as I grow my business. Occasionally, I offer promotions, but I don’t plan them far in advance. As a freelance editor and indie author, I’m an advocate for freelancers making livable wages.

Do we sign a contract?

Always! A contract or service agreement is primarily in place to protect my authors and their intellectual and creative work. However, it also offers me protections as an editor. It’s in everyone’s best interest to have some kind of service agreement in place.

Do you offer rush editing?

Currently, I do not offer rush editing and I don’t have any plans to do so in the future. Editing is only one part of my job, and I need to schedule clients in ways that provide them with my full attention when I work on their projects. My turnaround time varies by project.

If you find yourself having more questions about my editing services or processes, please feel free to leave a comment or reach out!
